Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design: New Edinburgh House

Recognized for its innovative and environmentally conscious design, the New Edinburgh House is a candidate for a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for Homes Platinum rating, and is the recipient of the New Edinburgh Heritage and Development “B.R.I.C.K.” (Burgh Renovation Improvement and Construction Kudos) Award for best new build in the community, October 2012. The New Edinburgh House boasts expansive vertical and horizontal glazing that allows for open views while creating interior columns of natural light. Raw meets refined, indoors meets out in this cool house of opposites. The warm, woody exterior is clad in reclaimed white oak boards, a great contrast to the cool, contemporary interiors where a palette of white is illuminated by endless natural light.

Floor to ceiling windows enclose the open concept kitchen, living and dining area, creating a lovely sun soaked space perfect for socializing or relaxing solo. To ensure that comfort accompanies this contemporary style space, heated exposed concrete floors create a cozy interior. The furnishings feature rustic knotty wood and textured fabrics in contrast to the minimalist backdrop. Wonderful the matte white lacquered cabinetry that flows through the interconnected kitchen, living and dining areas, adding architectural interest and stylish storage without visually cluttering this sweeping space. An open staircase zigzags its way up along a glass wall that spill light into all levels. The New Edinburgh House was designed by Ottawa-based architecture firm Christopher Simmonds Architect Inc.
